Catherine Russell

Catherine Russell is that rarest of entities - a genuine jazz and blues singer - who can sing virtually anything. Whether she's shimmying through a barrel-house stomper, channeling fifties R&B, dragging her weary heart through a torchy juke joint number, or kicking up her heels honky tonk style, Ms. Russell can stand comparison to her greatest forbearers.

This tour of Catherine Russell is funded through Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation's Jazz Touring Network in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Program.

Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers

He's one of the few blues guitarists who learned first hand from the masters of the blues, not off a blues record or DVD. Thackery has lived the life of a true road warrior; he's absorbed the artistic lessons of life and filtered them into his guitar playing and song writing. In 1992, Thackery put together his three piece band called the Drivers to highlight his explosive guitar and hit the blues highway. As the Boston Globe put it, "Jimmy Thackery is a four-hour performer. That's not how long he plays, but how long one should travel to see him."
Nat Reese and Blues Unlimited

Nat Reese was recently selected as a 2009 WV Music Hall of Fame inductee. Blues Unlimited has been associated with coalfield bluesmaster Nat Reese for many years. Originally nameless, existing only as Nat’s back-up band, they struck out on their own, though they continue to play with Reese whenever possible. When they are privileged to accompany the King of the Coalfield Blues, the redoubtable Mr. Nat Reese, it ain’t nothing but a blues thing!
The Backtimers

The Backtimers is a four piece band based out of southern West Virginia. Lead singer and bass guitarist, Jeffrey Joe Buckland's smooth and smokey vocal style guides the band through a terrific collection of songs. Balancing great covers with powerful and evocative originals, The Backtimers bring a real sense of urgency and spontanaiety to their music.
Eddie Shaw and the Wolf Gang

The original back-up band for the legendary Howlin’ Wolf until his death in 1975, they are considered to be one of the premier Chicago blues bands performing today. Over the past 50 years, Shaw has played on tenor and alto sax, as well as harmonica, with some of the biggest legends in Chicago blues; Howlin' Wolf, Magic Sam, Muddy Waters, Freddie King, Otis Rush and Willie Dixon, to name a few.
